Meet John Matthews. He is P4K’s newest high school program coordinator and will be working with the 9th and 10th grade students and their mentors at Benson, North, and Northwest High Schools this fall. John says he looks forward to watching the students grow in their education and ability to fulfill their potential. “They accomplish so many wonderful things in a year, and it is very exciting to be a part of that,” he says.
John is no stranger to helping students prepare for higher education. Prior to joining Team P4K, John worked as a program coordinator for P4K partner program, College Possible. He also supervised AmeriCorps service members at Benson, Northwest and Westside High Schools.
Before he realized his passion for working with young people, John actually worked in the research laboratories, studying HIV, pediatric metabolic disorders and late-stage ovarian cancer. He even spent a summer in Kenya, where he ran the HIV/Tropical Disease diagnostic labs at a rural health clinic and a district hospital.
When John isn’t working, or studying diseases, he loves to cook and go to concerts. He is a self-proclaimed JaySker (Creighton basketball and Husker football fan) and enjoys taking in sports of all kinds.
